Brief History of the St. Augustine Alligator Farm

The St. Augustine Alligator Farm began in the late 19th-century when George Reddington and Felix Fire began collecting alligators on Anastasia Island. They started showing their collection of these beautiful animals to the public in a small exhibition, but it soon grew into a quintessential Florida attraction. Today, it functions as a modern zoo and serves the public and scientific community with educational shows and exhibits.

2 of the Best Things to Do at the St. Augustine Alligator Farm

1. Explore the Exhibits

In addition to the alligator and crocodile exhibits, the zoological park is also home to a wide range of other animals including birds, reptiles, fossils, and more. Here are just a few of the animals and attractions you’ll be able to enjoy during your visit.

  • Albino Alligators: These rare creatures are beautiful to look at and even more fascinating to learn about.  Legend has it that those who gaze upon these captivating reptiles will receive good fortune.
  • Exotic Birds and Mammals: In this exhibit, you’ll discover exotic birds and five monkey species (two of which are endangered). From mouse-sized pygmies to the inquisitive macaw, you’ll see it all!
  • Gomek Forever: Weighting in at nearly 2,000 pounds, Gomek was one of the largest crocodiles to ever live in a zoo. He originated in New Guinea but spent most of his adult life at the St. Augustine Alligator Farm. While he has long since passed, he is tastefully preserved in his own exhibit and is surrounded by beautiful New Guinean art.
