Faver-Dykes State Park History

The history of Faver-Dykes State Park can be traced back to 500 B.C. when the  Timucuan Indians, also known as “The Lost Tribe,” inhabited the land. These Indians were skilled hunters and fishermen, and the park’s dense forest, river, and oceanfront played an important role in their everyday lives.

When the Spanish arrived in the 1800s, the park became part of the Buena Suerte Plantation granted by Spain to General Joseph Hernandez. Years later, it was occupied by U.S. troops during the Second Seminole War. It wasn’t until 1950 that the land was donated to Florida State Board of Parks and Historic Memorials and named after the donor’s parents, Alexander Hall Faver and Florida Dykes Faver.

5 Things to Do at Faver-Dykes State Park

1. Hiking and Nature Trails

There are four Faver-Dykes State Park trails to choose from, each boasting its own unique features. The Picnic Area Nature Trail is ideal for leisurely strolls since it is only half a mile long and dominated by Longleaf Pines and Turkey Oak trees. If you’re looking for a more challenging trek, the Hiram Faver Trail is 2.6-miles long and ends at an overlook of Pellicer Flats.

2. Canoeing and Kayaking

Faver-Dykes State Park is one of the best spots for kayaking in St. Augustine, and for good reason! Pellicer Creek is a designated Florida state canoe trail and a beautiful place to observe the extensive bird and marine life in the area. Canoe rentals can be obtained inside the park but require an advanced reservation, so be sure to call the park to save yours! It only costs $5 plus tax per hour or $25 plus tax for the full day.

3. Fishing

Both saltwater and freshwater fishing opportunities are available inside Faver-Dykes State Park! At the fishing dock, you’ll have the chance to catch fish such as red drum, black drum, spotted seatrout, and more. If you head closer to the creek headwaters, you can cast the line for freshwater species including largemouth bass and bream.

Please keep in mind that a fishing license may be required and size and bag limits are strictly enforced.

4. Picnicking

Whether you’re searching for a romantic date idea or the perfect spot to share a meal in the great outdoors, Faver-Dykes State Park is not to be missed! There are several picnic pavilions located throughout the park, some of which are located right beside the beautiful Pellicer River. The area is also nestled underneath a canopy of tall pine trees, creating plenty of shade and soft ground covered in pine needles. Restrooms and a playground are also available at the picnic facility.

5. Birding and Wildlife Viewing

Pellicer Creek is a popular site for birding with more than 100 bird species calling the area home. Songbirds, eagles, falcons, and more make their nests in the park’s tall trees while wading birds such as egrets and wood storks stalk the shallow waters of the river. As you explore the peaceful park, you may also come across other animals such as deer, turkeys, bobcats, and river otters.
