Bridge of Lions Information and History

In the mid-1920s the Bridge of Lions was constructed to provide an easy way for vehicular traffic to cross the Intracoastal from Downtown St. Augustine to Anastasia Island. It is a double-leaf bascule bridge and named for the magnificent lion sculptures that adorn it (named Firm and Faithful).

The plans for the Bridge of Lions were developed by D.P. Davis, who at the time was well-known for his work on Davis Islands in Tampa, FL.

However, soon after the project was underway, a sudden residential boom took place and the construction of the bridge was halted. Davis’ original plans for a dredging bridge were also put to an end, and he quickly re-imagined his idea into what is now the Bridge of Lions. It was finally completed in 1927 and has remained a St. Augustine icon ever since.

The Bridge of Lions also acts as a drawbridge and allows recreational and commercial ships to pass through the bay. Many visitors love to watch the bridge open up for passing boats.

How to Enjoy the Bridge of Lions

While the Bridge of Lions was created for vehicles to cross, pedestrians can also enjoy its beauty from the sidewalks that run along either side of it.

The walk across the Bridge of Lions and back is approximately one mile, making for a fun and scenic workout. At the top of the bridge, you’ll find fantastic photo opportunities and just the chance to stop and admire the unparalleled views.
